The front panel of the Kenbak-1 is made of brushed aluminum, and one thing I have discovered in the few days that I've had it is that it shows fingerprints. A lot. Maybe I just have greasy hands, but in no time at all my front panel was covered with ugly finger and palm prints. Fortunately, it's easy to solve that problem:
- Remove any switches and lights (obviously
)
- Wash the front panel in a mild detergent. Don't use a scouring pad and don't use any kind of solvent, otherwise you run the risk of removing the lettering
- Dry thoroughly. Handle the panel by the edges or use gloves. Don't touch the front with your bare hands.
- Apply a couple of coats of clear lacquer. I used Minwax clear satin aerosol lacquer.
It's easy to do and I think it's well worthwhile. My panel looks great now no matter how much I handle it.
