Default 1702A programmer works!

I bought a 1702A programmer off e-bay in September for ~$600 because my Altair programmer is too hard to use for large big jobs. The thing never worked! I finally traced the problem down to the power supply shutting off when the 1702A programming current turns on. I replaced the power supply and it works perfectly.

I can now program a 256 byte 1702A EPROM in 4 minutes 40 seconds from Windows XP! This is probably the last commercially available EPROM programmer that can still program 1702As. It was introduced in 1997 and discontinued in 2006. Its almost twice as slow as the Altair programmer, but this one verifies the EPROM, which the Altair programmer did not. I had to manually verify every EPROM programmed with the Altair.

I will be shipping out the 8 EPROM sets very soon to those who bought the PMC card but have not received the EPROMs.

Very cool! What make of programmer is it Grant? I'd like to keep an eye open for one myself. I suppose you got the last one on the planet though :-)

I have been toying with the idea of building one as an alternative. I've got a programmer that goes back to 2708 but that unit was never capable of 1702 and friends due to the power supply requirements. So, 1702 is the missing link here.

Talking Eproms

Eight Sets!?! What's included in those? I am on the list of ROM board purchasers, right?

These are the EPROMs on my card. I will be offering an advanced ROM monitor to replace F and H for people who don't own or never intend to own a disk drive system. The extended ROM monitor is a lot more useful than the standard one.

A-VTL2 - Very Tiny Language 2
B-VTL2
C-VTL2
D-VLT2
E-Music - The Altair AM radio music program with its own bootloader
F-Monitor - A ROM monitor
G-MBL - Tape / paper tape boot loader
H-DBL - Disk Boot Loader

Anyone who bought the 88-PMC gets the ROM set, so yes you will have one set (8 EPROMs in each set)

The programmer is a B&K Precision 864 WITH the 1702A module. The 1702A module sits on top and has its own switching power supply and a TON of transistors. I'm pretty sure the B&K programmer is really a private labeled programmer made by a European company.
