Vintage Computer Book

At Barnes & Noble I picked up a book called:

Core Memory, A Visual Survey of Vintage Computers.

This basically is a photo book of a selection of machines in the Computer History Museum in...

e and pi

I've been traveling the last few weeks (Thanksgiving to the US actually) and haven't worked on the program.

For e I simply leave out the first term (1) and only keep track of the bits behind the...

Calculating e

So I managed to calculate e

e = 1 + 1/1! + 1/2! + 1/3! ....

up to 88 decimals. I used 120-176 for the term and 320-376 for the sum. The program that converts to decimals by multiplying with 10...

Everything is OK

Everything works properly and I tested some loops to initialize the term and the series. Tonight I wrote the part that will do divisions on arbitrary numbers, but I didn't put it in yet. It is 62...

Assembler

So exactly how do I go about using AS? I want to write a program to calculate E (Euler's constant). The series converges rapidly and you only need to maintain the sum and the term.

Finding the error

I suspected the IC52 and I replaced it with the one in IC77. Then the problem of all the LEDs being lit constantly was gone, and I wrongly concluded I found the answer. But it just accidentally...

Everything works

To make a long story short: see the attached picture of IC25. The problem had nothing to do with a faulty 7420 as I mistakenly claimed before. It really is this simple. Only some people (Geoff) find...

74ls20

The days you could run to the local store and pick up a 7420 are definitely over. How sad. No Kenbak programming this weekend. I ordered several 74**s online and they will probably arrive on...

Found It !

Also in my case the culprit was a 7420. It was IC52 (page 24). I found it by using signal IN (pin 5 of IC117, page 04) to trigger my oscilloscope (also vintage) to see what happens the moment 377 is...

Son of John

Perhaps Eric's machine is the one that was modified by John's son. See:

http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/kenbak/JohnBlankenbaker_1986.pdf

At page 8 (last page) he refers to three machines: the...

Alive but not working

I finished the kit and it seems to work. However, the CLEAR button doesn't clear the data LEDs. The INPUT LED lights up though. Some other key combinations result in most of the LEDs to go out, so it...

IC Cross Reference

The reason I found out about IC99 is that I made a cross reference table for the ICs because I found myself continuously scanning through 24 diagrams to look for a particular IC. See the attachment.

Netherlands + IC99

Meanwhile the kit arrived in the Netherlands. It really looks great. A job well done, Grant. [Actually, it was there already last Tuesday but it had to fight its way through Customs.]

I studied...
